We’re excited to share that Absecon Veterinary Hospital now has a new diagnostic tool available for our patients: an endoscope. An endoscope allows our veterinary team to perform an endoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that helps us look inside a pet’s body without the need for more invasive exploratory surgery.
What Is an Endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a procedure performed under general anesthesia using a long, flexible or rigid tube with a tiny camera and light at the tip. This tool gives our veterinarians a real-time view of areas inside your pet’s body.
Depending on your pet’s size and the area being examined, the endoscope may be inserted through natural openings such as the mouth, nose, ears, or rectum. The live video feed allows us to see what is happening internally with a much closer and more detailed view.
What Can Endoscopy Help Diagnose?
Endoscopy can be helpful when a pet is experiencing symptoms that are difficult to explain through a physical exam or routine diagnostics alone. This tool allows us to identify abnormalities with greater accuracy, including:
Inflammation
Foreign objects
Ulcers
Tumors
Tissue changes
Other internal abnormalities
Endoscopy can also be used to collect biopsies and, in some cases, remove foreign material from areas such as the stomach, ears, or nose.
When Should You Ask About Endoscopy?
If your pet has chronic or recurring symptoms that cannot be fully explained with an exam, blood work, X-rays, or ultrasound, endoscopy may be an important next step in reaching a diagnosis.
This can be especially helpful for pets with ongoing digestive issues, unexplained discomfort, chronic nasal concerns, ear problems, or other symptoms that require a closer look.
Helping Pets Get Answers
At Absecon Veterinary Hospital, our goal is always to provide the most thorough and thoughtful care possible. By adding endoscopy to our diagnostic capabilities, we are able to offer another advanced option to help pets get answers, and help families better understand what may be going on.
If your pet has been experiencing ongoing symptoms or you have questions about whether endoscopy may be right for them, please contact our team to schedule an appointment. Check out our endoscope in action below!
