Access to veterinary care is one of the most important, and often overlooked, factors influencing a pet’s health and wellbeing. With current advances in medicine and technology, we often can do much more for our patients, but many pets may still struggle to receive care in the first place.

Recent research in veterinary medicine has made one thing clear: accessibility is not just about convenience, it directly impacts health and care outcomes for pets.

At Absecon Veterinary Hospital, we believe that care should be accessible and meet pets and their families where they are. That is the driving force behind the expansion of our mobile veterinary services. This has allowed us to remove barriers to receiving care and treatment, improve experiences, and ultimately provide better health outcomes.

Access to Veterinary Care

Studies on access to veterinary care (often referred to as A2VC) have consistently shown that many families face barriers that delay or prevent treatment altogether.

These barriers include:

  • Transportation limitations

  • Distance from clinics

  • Scheduling constraints

  • Financial considerations

  • Stress associated with visits to the vet

Research published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science highlights that these barriers can lead to delayed diagnosis, untreated illness, and decreased overall animal welfare.

Even more concerning, national reports suggest that when access is limited, families may be forced into difficult decisions, which include postponing care, surrendering pets, or considering euthanasia.

Access is also much more than just how far someone lives from the clinic. There are other things to consider like, can the client physically get to the hospital? Are appointments open when they are needed? Is care financially manageable for the client? Does the client feel comfortable and supported at the hospital with their care team? Sometimes in-client consultations don’t address all these needs, but a mobile visit can.

How Mobile Services Improve Care Outcomes

There are a number of ways mobile veterinary services improve the health and wellbeing of pets.

When pet parents have the option of the veterinary team coming to them, this ultimately leads to routine exams being scheduled, better follow through with recommendations, and concerns being addressed sooner. When we can provide care sooner, we are able to provide faster diagnoses, keep disease from advancing, and open the door to better long-term health.

At home visits also tend to be much less stressful for pets and for people. This is especially true for clients who have anxious or fearful pets, feline patients, patients that have mobility issues or concerns, and even senior citizens. When care is provided at home, pets can be more relaxed, easier to examine, and in their own environment, pets tend to reflect their true behaviors and conditions. This ultimately allows for more accurate assessments and a better overall experience.

Another way mobile services improve care is that it eliminates the stress and barriers related to transportation. It can eliminate the need for a car, as well as the struggle of getting a patient into a carrier (our cat parents understand!). It also removes the stress of travel time, logistics, and missed appointments due to scheduling conflicts. Ultimately, clients face fewer obstacles in ensuring their pet gets care.

Absecon Veterinary Hospital also acknowledges the tremendous value of the human-animal bond. When we are able to make care accessible and supportive, families tend to feel more empowered, compliance improves, and the trust between clients and the veterinary team is deepened.

Mobile services also allow us to expand care to underserved populations. By meeting families at home, we reach all walks and circumstances of life. This can include busy families, elderly pet owners, households with limited mobility, and pets who would otherwise go without care. It is through these services that we find equity in veterinary medicine.

Expanding Access Even Further: Telemedicine

While mobile veterinary care removes many barriers, telemedicine adds another layer of accessibility and makes veterinary guidance available even more quickly and conveniently.

Telemedicine allows pet owners to connect with a veterinarian from home for:

  • Follow-up consultations

  • Minor concerns or triage

  • Medication and treatment discussions

  • Ongoing management of chronic conditions

  • Behavior consultations

Research on access to care shows that when barriers like time, transportation, and scheduling are reduced, pet owners are more likely to seek care early rather than wait until a problem worsens. Telemedicine plays a key role in making that possible.

Telemedicine allows families to get timely answers from trusted professionals, determine if an in-person visit is needed, and start supportive care for their pets sooner. For those clients who find it difficult to get to the clinic, telemedicine reduces the time commitment needed for a visit, eliminates travel, and provides a more flexible approach.
